Kitulgala, being a popular destination for adventure lovers, has a variety of thrilling activities like white water rafting down the majestic Kelani River rapids. Other activities include, canoeing, jungle treks and bird watching in Sri Lanka.

White water rafting Sri Lanka

White water rafting is a thrilling experience that does not require too much physical preparation. If you are looking for a fun adrenaline rush, go to Kitulgala for white water rafting. Sourced by the Kelani River it offers excellent rapids for hours of rafting fun. Anybody above 10 years old can try out rafting and the level can be chosen accordingly. Avid thrill seekers can start off with the 5 major rapids that are found at the upper section of the river. A novice can begin with the slower rapids with lower levels of water.

Canyoning (Rock Sliding)

For some extra thrills, try your hand at canoeing (rock sliding). It is a short jungle trek till another small river in the vicinity, with natural pools, plunge pools, waterfalls and canyons. After a comprehensive safety briefing, you will slide down rocks to enter the beautiful natural plunge pools, and jump off the top of small waterfalls into a natural pool for ultimate thrills. Also try scrambling, abseiling, climbing or simply enjoy a swim in the refreshingly clean cool water.

Bird Watching

Kithulgala is the perfect place to do bird watching, with more than 50 rare species of birds. Just perfect for nature lovers, you can spot the rainforest bird species like Spurfowl, Spot-winged Thrush and Green-billed coucal. Serendip scops owl is Sri Lankas’ most recently discovered bird. Species such as the Mountain Hawk Eagle, Layard’s Parakeet and Crested Treeswift can be seen on the hill above the rubber plantations. Sri Lanka’s endemic bird species such as the Chestnut-backed owlet and the Sri Lanka Orange-billed babbler, and a variety of butterflies can also be spotted in Kitulgala.

The Beli Lena Cave

About 1.5 km away from Palmstone Retreat, is the Beli Lena cave. This is one of the largest pre-historic caves in the country. It was the site where the 12,000 year old skeletal remains of the Balangoda Man were found. Several fossils, excavated here are more than 32,000 years old. This cave can be accessed by a 1 km steep path on the hillside, looking down the lush tea and rubber plantations.

White Water Kayaking

Kayakers can enjoy white water kayaking in Kithulgala along the Kelani River and the surrounding rivers.  While kayaking, pass through the steep mountains, thick jungle and tea and rubber plantations. The Kelani River has seven distinct challenging Class II and III rapids over 7 km. They let you surf a few waves while watching out for the next horizon line. The upper section of the Kelani River, with five world-class Class IV rapids over a 7 km run, offers a more thrilling experience. Seethawaka River is another kayaking spot with several Class III-V rapids for expert kayakers.

Hiking

Try your fitness level at Kithulgala as you walk through the verdant forests. Here, you can climb up and feast your eye with the stunning views of Kelani River valley. Pass through dense tea and rubber plantations, pre-historic Beli Lena Caves. Climb up the 100 ft tall Sandun Ella Waterfall and move towards Makandawa Rainforest Reserve, another popular hiking destination.

Abseiling

Go for a thrilling abseiling in Kithulgala, to enjoy stunning waterfalls up close and also hang on a rope! Enjoy a half hour hike through the tea country to Sandun Ella waterfalls, for stunning panoramic mountain views. As you descend off the 100 ft waterfall, you will be surrounded by picturesque views of the mountains.

Biking

Explore the jungles, tea and rubber estates of Kithulgala through biking on the cycling tracks. This is a great way to visit the rural villages, green forested hill and the scenic locations.
